2017 Boys General Evaluation Information
Reason for Boys' Evaluation
- Our goal is to assign your son to the team that optimizes his continued development (e.g., Spanish I or Spanish II based on current, not eventual fluency
- Consistent with our League (CVYL), we are required to field at least one A and one B team in our Boys Jr and Sr Divisions
- In some years, we have enough players to field two B teams in a Division
Evaluation criteria
- A or B team current fluency is based on two primary criteria
1. Previous season evaluation
2. Indoor tryout evaluation
- Per US Lacrosse, 'Areas of Evaluation' are:
1. Technical: passing, catching, dodging, shooting, ground balls, off-hand, etc.
2. Tactical: how a player performs in game or scrimmage situations, moving the ball, moving off ball, team defense, team offense, transition
3. Approach: effort, hustle, attitude, etc.
4. Physical: speed, quickness, agility, size
5. School Grade: higher grade within Division is a consideration for players of equal ability
6. Positional: players are evaluated at their chosen position relative to their peers; balancing the number of position players per team is also a consideration
7. Commitment to Lacrosse: At AYL we believe in the evidence suggesting the best athletes play multiple sports and do not specialize in one sport over all others at a young age. While recognizing and supporting that philosophy whole-heartedly, if all things are equal we recognize commitment to lacrosse. For instance, did the player play fall ball or winter lacrosse, or attend lacrosse camps?
Preparing your son
- Parents play a huge role in this process
- There are three overarching themes we would urge you to consider reinforcing with your child as the tryouts approach:
- Try your best and give 100% effort throughout
- I'm proud of you for working so hard at this; and
- No matter what the outcome is, you know I (we) love you
